Anyone who experienced the recent Gathering Of Champions event in London in September will know that Bishop T D Jakes from Texas is a breathtaking expounder of God's Word, a rasping, gasping Holy Spirit exuding phenomenon who in many ways is an echo of those gravel-voiced preachers like, Rev J M Gates, who became recording stars in the 1920s. Today, of course, the Christian media world is somewhat bigger Bishop Jakes' debut CD 'Woman Thou Art Loosed' was a huge seller and this 1998 follow up, where the good reverend is helped out by The Potter's House Mass Choir, and a blisteringly tight and funky band, has been a big success too (it's been in the US Gospel Charts 44 weeks as we go to press) with some faith building narration, some smouldering lead vocals (La Shonda Watson and Dolores Ford-Coleman are both superlative divas) and enough electrifying atmosphere to move the staidest believer. While we Brits STILL await a UK release for Bishop Jakes' 'Sacred Love Songs' hit album, make sure you've caught up with this one.
