Having despatched Split Level across the Atlantic, the USA returns serve with a fine backhand volley of raw guitar, driving bass, subtle keys and songs with real melodies. The band's first album for Tattoo was preceded by six years of hard graft, gigs and independent releases (selling nearly 10,000 copies!), but they are still committed to their ministry and aim for people to "hear their hearts through the music". "Despite The Rain" opens proceedings with a killer chorus and sets the pace for the whole album: "All I have to do is look to you/And I will never be the same/My life's been changed and like a child/I will play despite the rain." Spiritual insights born out of experience bring the extra dimension. From vulnerability ("Lay It Down" and "Take My Hand") to defiance ("To The End" and "Slings And Arrows") the band display their ability to convey many moods. Their own publicity describes the band as "energetic modern pop" with message, melodies and hooks but the best way to enjoy Between Thieves is to listen to them...
