This 2009 release introduced us to this talented four-piece from Anaheim, California. Throwing together elements of punk and classic hardcore, The Hoax remind me of The Crucified with their energetic and vicious delivery that creates a pit-circling vibe. Tyler D's vocals stand out as he shreds his chords over a stripped down backing delivered at breakneck speed. Coming in at around 20 minutes these 12 tracks certainly fly by, helped by some thrashy guitars and metronomic drum work. There are moments of shade and variation amidst the assault, "Don't Waste My Time" opens with a brooding lumbering bass and "Clock In Clock Out" mixes rhythms up and features an impressive lead outro. Lyrically The Hoax are as forthright as their music, upholding their record label's twist on the derogatory Bible thumper tag when deciding on a name. The basic production on this record does not limit the recording, in fact, it adds to the authenticity of the sound giving the tracks a live feel. This band brings back memories of classic hardcore with the addition of a current energy.
