For a peculiar brand of hard rock music, Puller's latest opus should suffice. Taking familiar boundaries a step beyond immediate appeal, this set can best be described as new wave progressive rock. Complex time changes are woven in between intricate rhythm sections and obscured arrangements deftly produced and executed by the band, forcing the listener to work hard in order to reap full benefit sonically. At times, 'Closer..' appears to be undisciplined in its structure; it is only as each piece is listened to carefully and appreciated individually over time, that one realises the dynamics Puller incorporate within their unique brand of art. No stone is left unturned by the band, as they expose and explore a wide range of subjects; from inner struggle ( the quirky 'Out Of My Head'), to the futility of human nature ('Own Devices') and the humble desire to submit to God, in spite of the weakness of the flesh ('Silent Film'). Though not immediately accessible, Puller's music is worth persevering with, as each spin of the disc reveals a new element not fully appreciated before. Tired of a genre fast becoming void of originality? Fear not, change is 'Closer Than You Think'.
