More in the vein of Metallica and Pantera, new comers Oil are unapologetically heavy metal as opposed to hard core. Produced by Clark Barnes, 'Refine' is a great sounding project, where the band have evidently been encouraged to excel as individuals, whilst simultaneously working together as a band. 'Refine' showcases some great lead guitar breaks at the hands of Nelson, in conjunction with solid time keeping courtesy of Vander Pal and driving bass lines provided by Joy over which Rinehart's peculiar vocal delivery emerges. In spite of such cuts as "SIN" and the slow building majesty of "Struggle", 'Refine' comes across as a little predictable at times. However, as debuts go, Oil have come up with a respectable set of compositions worthy of investigation.
