The summer of 1979 and two years on from "God Save The Queen", finally Britain's Christian music labels wake up to the fact that punk had happened. In the UK, there are a few punk bands worthy of attention like
Ishmael United and Giantkiller who've been making waves on the live scene. From the north west, the Bill Mason Band get the deal with Kingsway and rather unfeasibly hit the studios with producer John Pantry! Live this band were like a torrent of energy and noise but somehow in CD, they sound a little cleaner than I'd have liked. I've always blamed Mr Pantry for that! I wonder what it would be like to have time travelled the band from 1979 to Tooth & Nail Records in 2002! Dreaming aside, if you were around during those days, you'll definitely want to get hold of this. Plenty of it has stood the test of time. There's the immediate impact of the opening cut "Billy & The Rota's", the insistent chorus of "I Don't Want You". "Stand Up And Be Counted" still sounds explosive and anthemic with its pounding rhythm. The message of "Radio" is still as relevant as it was in 1979 with its "ain't no God on that radio" chorus. When it comes to evangelistically challenging material there's the thought provoking "I Got The Answers" or "Mr G" (complete with Sylvester disco interlude!) that were designed to connect with those searching. Whether you ever got a chance to see them play live or not, there's no doubt that 'No Sham' is a British Christian rock classic. Now I wonder when Giantkiller will get a CD release? Or what about 100% Proof?

I picked up a rumour that BMB are going to play Manchester later this year, supporting After The Fire. Is it true?? It would be fantastic to hear the band again after all these years - they really helped to fire up my early Christian life.

It's for a great cause too!

What fantastic memories. I was reminded of 100% Proof today so just doing some browsing and came across the link into this site too. I have the claim to fame of playing drums with "Green" (3 piece band of me, Paul Braddock and Raf Iddin - all good friends of BMB) who were the support act at the Garrick Theatre, Stockport gig - was it really '79. Still in touch with Big Shaun who I know is a good mate. Blessings to all of you, happy days !

Met Bill Mason @ Greenbelt festival don't remember which year, as I went two or three times, think it was 1979. I walked right into him (literally) as I tripped over a guy rope as I was leaving one of the food tents in the villiage, and my sausage shot across the floor. Anyway I recognised Bill and I brushed myself down and spoke to him for a while, he kindly gave me a signed copy of the single "Out on the streets". Sadly I don't have it any more after so many years, I was just 16 at the time. I've been looking for a copy for years without success. Ok still haven't been able to find one but finding this website I was able to hear a clip on MP3.....magic! It brought back my lost youth!..if only for a minute!

I first saw BMB at Penketh High School late 70s. then again at Newcastle Uni. then St.Martins' College Lancaster, Sutton Parish Hall, Greenbelt, Gorton and lots of places in between! Times move on and people change but fond memories remain! Thanks BMB. Liz x

I quite like it too - "top drumming" - I might be able to give Captain Bill a bit of help with the website as well.

Hey there I realize why I never responded, because it has been a few years since I visited this part of crossrhytms site! But now we have connected it is good to hear how things are going with you! For those who are following this thread, this guy is none other than the fastest drummer in the west Dave Rawding from BMB! We need a reunion gig next year wouldn't that be something, I could swing my walking stick around and you could fall off your wheelchair!

Hey Bill, was remembering the old days while surfing on the web, It was a long time ago - you may remember me - I did the sound for you through my good friend Beaky on occasion - usually when the band was desperate. They were great days I am blond and was member at YF, If you remember I had my own band "Connection" with Gillian Pech and John Marshal did sound and managed the band "Daze" with Chris Goodie and I lived with Andy Hawthorn brother of lead guitarist (oops forgot name) Looks like you are in Erie - I know the history there - guess you decided to emigrate. hope all is well and thanks for the memories. Hi Bill,

I'm originally from South Manchester, Cheadle, Cheshire. That's where I first saw The Bill Mason Band.
I saw your band firstly in our Assembly hall at Moseley Grammer School, Cheadle Hulme. Secondly we went to see you at 'The Upper Room' on Wilmslow Rd, Cheadle. On the occasion we didn't actually get in to see the gig. I think there might have been some scuffle by the entrance, and we got turfed just before got to the pay desk. Thirdly, we saw you at 'The Garrat' (or is it 'The Garrack') Theatre in Stockport. It was a seated venue as I remember, quite tame but a great show anyway. Forth gig was somewhere in Salford. It was a great show, good size venue, but not too big. I remember it was a good atmosphere, a buzz in the air. After the gig I bought the album which was on sale in the foyer, and it was autographed by Yourself. That gig at Moseley School was the first gig I went to and although it was a long time ago I remember being impressed by what was a new experience for me, 'Loud and Raw'. I've still got the album, it still sounds real and fresh.

Hey Stevemunster, Bill Mason here! Thanks for your kind words. What school gig was that you saw the bmb at? Plus you said three other times, I would be interested to know where those gigs were and dates. I am hoping to start a bill mason band website, this kind of information will be a big help! Keep rockin'!
Blessings.
