Children’s books do not reflect modern UK society, with ethnic minorities significantly under represented, according to a study. Government figures show that, in England, one in three primary school pupils are from a minority ethnic background. But the study, published by national charity the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education, says that of the 9,115 children’s books published in the UK last year, just 931 (4%) featured BAME characters.

Edinburgh University student union officials will hand out pronoun badges to freshers so that they know what pronouns to use when referring to each other. The Students’ Association has published a guide to sharing pronouns which explains that assuming what pronouns to use based on appearance “can be frustrating and harmful.”

People who believe men cannot become women should be sent to Soviet-era labour camps for re-education, according to Goldsmiths university’s LGBTQ+ society. Estimates of the number of people who died in the camps, between the 1910s to the 1950s, run into the millions. Following the tweets, Goldsmiths Students’ Union disaffiliated the group, expressing disgust over the social media postings.

Almost half of parents have taken their child out of school to go on holiday, with many saying it is too expensive to go away during the summer break, a poll suggests. More than one in four (27%) mothers and fathers say they have taken their youngster out of lessons for a trip on more than one occasion, according to a survey commissioned by Co-op Insurance. Parents can be fined £60 if their child misses school without permission – including for holidays.

More than 40 children a day are being expelled and more than 2,000 suspended from England’s state schools, figures suggest. Government statistics reveal a hike in permanent and fixed-period exclusions in 12 months. While persistent disruptive behaviour remains the most common reason for exclusion, there has also been a rise for other reasons including sexual misconduct, racial abuse and physical and verbal assault, the figures reveal.

A report by health and hygiene company Essity found a fifth of early years teachers spend up to 30 minutes a week cleaning up youngsters after they have been to the toilet. It equates to more than a million hours of lost time over an academic year.
