Almost three-quarters of university students want more information on how their tuition fees are spent, research suggests. A report from the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) indicates around 44% of tuition fee income is spent on teaching, with much of the rest going on areas that directly benefit students. The University and College Union (UCU) says the move will eliminate unconditional offers and “chaotic” clearing process, and courses would start in November. Children in private schools will no longer have to be explicitly taught about gay marriage, cohabiting couples or same-sex families, according to guidance issued in early October that critics have described as a government U-turn. The number of teachers leaving the profession has been increasing since 2010, highlighting a “chronic” problem with teacher retention, a report suggests. The report published by the National Foundation for Educational Research, calls for the Government to place a greater emphasis on improving teacher retention in order to ease supply pressures. Between 2010/11 and 2014/15, the rate of working-age teachers leaving the profession has increased from 8.9% to 10.3% in primary schools. | |

Almost a third (30 per cent) of professional parents said they know someone who has used ethically dubious means to get their children into a good school. In May 2012 the UK Christian Institute reported that children as young as four were being removed from school for sexual misconduct. They were among almost 15,000 youngsters who had been expelled or suspended for sexual offenses – including assaults on teachers – in the previous five years. England’s school system has seen greater funding cuts than Wales in recent years, according to the institute for Fiscal Studies. Cuts to local council budgets and post-16 education have fuelled a larger drop in per pupil spending in England than across the border. Students could find themselves shelling out thousands of pounds more a year in living costs depending on where they choose to study, according to a study. Research by Which? University suggests that those who choose to study in London could pay out over £15,000 more over a three-year degree in rent and other items such as household bills and food compared to those at a university in Northern Ireland. | |
