Dutch health and justice ministers are proposing legislation for assisted suicide for those who feel their life is ‘complete’. They told the country’s parliament that those who feel their life is complete should "be allowed to finish that life in a manner dignified for them". Euthanasia accounted for almost four percent of all deaths in the Netherlands in 2015. | |

Norway’s health ministry has ruled that women from abroad who are pregnant with twins may use Norway's medical services to abort one of the twins, if they so wish. The procedure, referred to as 'selection reduction abortion', was legalised in Norway this February. | |

An EU agreement with Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft and other Internet companies announced on 31 May, commits IT companies to work with ‘civil society organisations’ to flag and remove comments deemed offensive within 24 hours. The origin of the policy was an E Colloquium on Fundamental Rights set up in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attacks. The role of the colloquium was to protect free speech. It has been criticised for focussing instead on combating Islamophobia. | |

The latest global slavery index was published at the end of May and estimated that nearly 46 million people are trapped in modern slavery around the globe. The research looked at modern slavery in 167 countries. It increased the global estimate to 45.8 million, up from 35.8 million in the last survey. India has the greatest number of people living in some form of slavery, with an estimated 18.3 million. 58% of those living in slavery across the globe are in five countries: India, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Uzbekistan. An estimated 11,700 are trapped in slavery in the UK (0.02% of the population). | |

The world Health Organisation believes polio could be eradicated from the world within months. The announcement comes after a mass vaccination drive was launched in Pakistan. The virus is set to become only the second human-hosted virus to be eradicated since the end of smallpox in 1980. Pakistan and neighbouring Afghanistan are the last places where polio remains endemic. | |

War and persecution has led to a haemorrhaging of Christians from the Middle East, particularly from Syria and Iraq, it was reported in April. Before 2011, Syrian Christians comprised around 8-10% of a 22 million population. 40-50% of those Christians have since left. Before 2003, there were approximately 1.5 million Christians in Iraq, but estimates now range from 200-500,000. In May the Daily Telegraph reported a spokesman saying: “Christians will all have left Iraq in five years”. | |

Executions in Iran surged to nearly 1,000 in 2015, the highest level in more than a quarter of a century, the UN’s special rapporteur on human rights in Iran reported in March. Dr Ahmed Shaheed reported to the UN human rights council that at least 966 people were put to death in Iran last year, roughly double the number executed in 2010 and ten times as many as in 2005. | |

The number of patients requesting euthanasia for mental conditions in Holland has risen sharply in the last five years, with only 2 in 2010 compared to 56 in 2015. Currently, 4% of deaths in Holland are a result of doctor-assisted suicide. Of last year’s total, 36 were conducted by a clinic in Amsterdam, which specialises in requests for euthanasia due to mental health conditions. One woman was euthanised for a germ phobia; another was a sexual abuse victim in her 20s. | |
