Same-sex 'marriage' has been abolished in Bermuda, after their parliament voted to replace same-sex marriage with domestic partnerships. Two thirds of Bermudan voters rejected same-sex 'marriage' in a referendum in 2016, but it was introduced this year after a supreme court ruling. Bermuda is the first territory where the law has reverted to a biblical definition of marriage.

The number of people hungry around the world has risen for the first time in more than a decade, a report from the UN says. The report, The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World, published last week, says that an estimated 815 million people were hungry last year – an increase of 38 million from the previous year – although down from about 900 million in 2000. Although well below levels of a decade ago, the percentage of the global population estimated to be suffering from hunger increased in 2016, from 10.6 to 11 per cent (it was 14.7 per cent in 2000).

A study that links pollution to one in six deaths worldwide, of which 92 per cent occur in developing countries, has prompted the aid agency Tearfund to amplify its calls for “repair, recycling, and reuse”. The report of the Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health published last week, links pollution to nine million deaths worldwide in 2015. It found air pollution to be the biggest contributor, linked to 6.5 million deaths, water pollution to 1.8 million; and workplace-related pollution to 0.8 million. Almost all the pollution-related deaths (92 per cent) occurred in low and middle income countries.

In October a student group at Princeton University removed the word ‘evangelical’ from its name after members of the group said the word ‘has a negative perception’. The Princeton Evangelical Fellowship became Princeton Christian Fellowship. The term ‘evangelical’ is more divisive after the election of President Donald Trump, in which media reported that nearly 81% of white evangelicals voted for him.

The UK has fallen out of the top ten most generous developed countries in the world in terms of giving to good causes, volunteering and helping strangers, the latest report from the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) World Giving Index has stated. The UK fell three places from eighth to 11th on the international index, which collects data from 139 countries around the world over a five year period (2012-2016 in the latest report).

A new report from Health Canada has revealed that over 2000 people have had their lives ended by euthanasia or assisted suicide since it was legalised in June 2016. A total of 1,982 deaths (1,977 from euthanasia and 5 from assisted suicide) have been reported between June 17 2016, when the practice was legalised, and June 30, 2017. The figures include 167 reported euthanasia deaths in Québec prior to the federal government legalizing assisted death, bringing the number to 2,149 reported assisted deaths in Canada.
