Council leaders are warning of harsh cuts to public services – despite nearly every local authority in the country planning to raise their council tax. Across the country increases of nearly five per cent are expected but services such as libraries and bin collections will still face shortfalls.

Volunteering levels have declined by 15 per cent over a decade, according to Office for National Statistics figures published today. Figures from the household satellite accounts, analysed today by the ONS, show that people in the UK volunteered for 1.93 billion hours in 2015, compared to 2.28 billion hours in 2005.

A record number of people killed themselves in prisons in England and Wales in 2016, figures show. There were 354 deaths behind bars in England and Wales last year, including 119 which were apparently self-inflicted. Self-harm incidents jumped by nearly a quarter, while there were more than 25,000 assaults in the 12 months to September – equivalent to nearly 70 attacks every day. Officers are also facing a rising torrent of violence, with the number of assaults on staff rising by two fifths.

One in four British charities—nearly 50,000 in all—is faith-based, says Rachel Wharton of New Philanthropy Capital, a think-tank. Half of all charities working in overseas aid have religious roots. Such groups receive nearly a quarter of the total income of registered charities in England and Wales—about £16bn ($20bn) a year.

The rise in online banking is being blamed on the closure of more than 1,000 banks across the UK over the last two years. New figures, revealed following research from Which?, have found that 1,046 branches shut between January 2015 and January 2017, with rural areas among the worst affected. Banking-giant HSBC was found to be the worst culprit after closing 321 branches – or 27 percent of its prance network over the 24-month period.

All holders of public office could be forced to swear an ‘Equality Oath’ showing their allegiance to so-called British values, a Cabinet Minister said in December. Youth services across the UK have seen an estimated £387m cut by local authorities over the last six years according to a new report from UNISON. The study suggests the cuts have led to loss of nearly 140,000 places for young people and more than 3,600 youth work jobs, as well as the closure of more than 600 youth centres since 2010. The union is also warning of further cuts over the next year, which could see 45,000 more youth service places removed, 800 more jobs lost and more than 30 youth centres closed.
