Rubber or plastic bullets should no longer be used for crowd control as they have the “potential to cause severe injuries and death”, health experts have warned. A study, which analysed published evidence on injury, disability and death associated with the use of the bullets in a number of countries including the UK, found 3% died of their injuries, while out of all the injuries reported, nearly three out of four (71%) were severe.

Analysis from the Children’s Society suggests that one million children in poverty will not be entitled to free school meals under new Universal Credit proposals. The charity calculates that once a family with one child passes the £7,400 threshold, it needs to earn £1,124 a year more – the equivalent of working 2.4 hours more each week at the national living wage – to make up for the loss in free school meals.

Universal Credit is due to be fully rolled out by 2022, when an estimated seven million are expected to claim it.

Some 44% of private renters with the lowest salaries sacrificed food, clothing or leisure activities for themselves or their children to make ends meet, research by the housing charity Shelter found.

Food bank volunteers put in a “staggering” 4.1 million hours of unpaid work a year distributing food, fundraising and other duties, a study reveals. The value of the work has been estimated at £30 million a year if the volunteers were paid the national living wage, research found. It said more than 700 independent food banks are now in operation, as well as the Trussell Trust’s 1,235, with the number needing emergency supplies rising dramatically as Universal Credit rolls out.

The NSPCC has revealed that its helpline has dealt with the highest number of calls and emails about child neglect in its history. In 2016-17 it received 19,448 calls and emails from adults concerned about child neglect, the equivalent to 53 a day. 87 per cent of those contacts were serious enough to be referred to social services or the police for further investigation, Many cases involved children under five.

Foodbank volunteers are carrying out £30-million-worth of unpaid work a year, new research has revealed, writes a staff reporter. Figures published this week by the Trussell Trust and the Independent Food Aid Network (IFAN) show that volunteers are donating nearly 3 million hours each year to distribute food to those in need of emergency help, and a further 1.2 million hours to carry out administrative tasks at foodbanks. If volunteers were paid the national living wage -- currently £7.50 per hour for over 25s -- the cost would be at least £30.8 million, the study estimates.

A ComRes poll of over 2,000 adults in Great Britain showed that 72% of the public think abortion should continue to be subject to a legal framework, including the requirement to get the consent of two doctors and not allowing abortion after 24 weeks unless the child is disabled or the mother’s life in danger. Just 12% disagreed.

The Times reports concerns from staff at the Clinic that their performance would be judged negatively if a pregnant woman decided not to proceed with a termination.

The question ‘what is your sex’ could be scrapped from the next census for fear of offending transsexual and ‘non-binary’ people, it has emerged. A report by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) suggests that asking people to declare their sex is “irrelevant, unacceptable and intrusive, particularly to trans participants”.

Hundreds of school pupils have been punished in the last four years for sexual acts, including seven who were only five years old, according to new data. The data revealed there were 754 reported incidents between July 2013 and April 2017. But the vast majority of councils contacted withheld their figures, meaning the number is probably much higher.
